Back Surgery – Orthopaedic Surgery

Back Surgery

When conservative treatments such as medication, physical therapy to relearn movement and strengthen muscles, or braces don’t help, our orthopedic specialists may recommend spine surgery. Also known as spinal surgery, advances in technology have made many procedures less invasive and faster to recover from.송파정형외과

Your health insurance may cover part or all of your surgical costs. Before you have surgery, it’s important to understand your out-of-pocket responsibility. This includes your deductible, co-pays and coinsurance.강동역정형외과

During surgery, your doctor inserts an intravenous line in your arm to administer a sedative and painkiller. A tubular retractor is then used to create a passage through the skin and soft tissue to reach the problem area of your spine. The surgeon may then remove the damaged disc, or a portion of it, or trim the bones in the back of your spine (laminectomy) to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves.

The surgeon may place a bone graft between two vertebrae, fusing them together. Typically, metal plates and rods are attached to help keep the spine stable. Fusion can limit flexibility in the spine, and it often takes several months for the bone to heal. Alternatives to fusion include decompression with instrumentation and dynamic stabilization methods such as dynesis that allow the spine to move while keeping it stable. In some cases, spinal implant devices called artificial disks can replace the damaged cushion between two spinal bones. These implants can preserve spine mobility and reduce pain.
